Family is very important to us at CGC. The definition of family has changed so much over the past few years. It is no longer defined as a two kids playing with the dog in the yard while June bakes a pie to have for dinner while pipe-smoking Ward arrives from a hard day at the office. In fact, I don't believe that life ever really existed for most of us. Now a family unit can consist of so many different elements.

In the GLBT community, we are experiencing more people deciding to have children. One place that needs to be a safe zone for our families is church. The heartbreaking fact is that while many churches seem to be GLBT friendly, their children's programs are not. While moms or dads are in a worship service that is very loving and non-judgmental, the kids are being taught that real families have a mom and a dad. Some children have even been told that they need to pray for their moms or dads because they are going to hell for being different. That is why it is so important you know what your children are being taught in Sunday School or Children's Church.

At Community Gospel, Kidz Krew is a full-service ministry with the goal of giving the children a solid foundation in God's Word by delivering the message at a child's level.  Kim Atkins is the director of Kidz Krew.  She and her team are working together to ensure the children have the best experience learning about Christ.

Each Sunday morning, the children are dismissed from church following the Praise and Worship to go to Kidz Krew.  During their Bible-based lesson, the kids are asked questions and give opportunities to discuss while learning.  During this time, the kids earn Bible Bucks, which they can use to purchase prizes form the "Bible Market."  After the lesson, the kids play a game to help them learn their memory verse.  Games range from basketball to Wheel of Fortune.  Here, they get another opportunity to earn more Bible Bucks.  At the conclusion of the lesson, Bible Market is open for business and the kids are allowed to purchase prizes.

Captain Kim Atkins

Kim has a variety of experience teaching children.  Growing up in Galveston County, Kim developed and participated in many afterschool and summer programs for children at local libraries and elementary schools.  Many of these programs strengthened children's ability to read and raised their interests in learning math.  After moving to Houston, Kim became part of an education program that targeted undreachieving students at schools with high dropout rates.  Kim was responsible for assisting the school faculty as well as tutoring students in math.
Kim has been a member of CGC since 2006.  She is a part of the Praise and Worship team and assists in various programs held at the church.  She also serves as the editor of the church newsletter.  Kim is a recent graduate of University of Houston - Clear Lake with a degree in Statistics.  Currently, she is a scientist at a Houston software company.

"I want our children to succeed in life and this can only be accomplished by having a strong and fruitful relationship with God Almighty."

Our Youth Ambassadors
....in their own words ....

I have been a Christian for five years.  I am on the Praise and Worship team at CGC.  I also participate in FUEL, the church's teen group.  I will be attending high school as a freshman in the fall of 2010.  I plan to go to college to become a pediatric physical therapist.  I love working with children.  My goal for my work in Kidz Krew is to help the kids develop a love for the Lord and to give them the desire to use any talents God gives them to praise and worship the Lord and lift up the name of Jesus Christ.

I am 16 years old and in high school.  I plan to attend the University of Houston to become a trained musician.  Throughout my life, I've had many unique experiences.  God has given me the strength to get through them.  He gave me the gift of playing the drums, guitar, and singing at church and school.  I enjoy teaching Kidz Krew because I want to help the kids understand what God can mean to them.
